Metis events
We posted about 2 weeks ago about upcoming "Metis" events on the Korean live servers (http://www.lineagecompendium.com/addcomment.asp?newsid=304). LineagePlayforum got some screenshots of this event (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051003&kid=964). Here are a few.. Go to the PF URL for more!

Korean Live updates
Korean live servers got a new publish today:
  • Certain areas around the front of the castle are now combat zones on the non-PK server.
  • Some bugs with the sound were fixed.
  • Moving your mouse over the time bar on the user interface now gives you the current Lineage time.
Update: ruben actually installed the Korean server update for use on Dep (hopefully it won't break when Episode 10 comes) and took a screenshot of the time bar in action: http://usuarios.tripod.es/unicej/korean.jpg

    HK news
HKLineage reports that HK servers have received a bunch of updates as well as some things specific to Chinese New Year (Feb. 12) and Valentines day (Feb. 14).

For Chinese New Years, HK servers got fireworks for use in celebration. They may even explode!

Also, for Chinese New Year, a "Chinese Red Pocket" which is a little envelope that you can put money in and give to people.

And for Valentines day, there are little Valentines notes, similar to the Christmas notes (that never made it to US servers).

Now, the following updates may actually make it to our server. We reported earlier that you could turn off Elf night vision and Elf teleport with the Korean Test server update from a few weeks back. Now they added an "English Only" option which may filter out all languages that are not english.

Also, it seems that moving the mouse over the time bar in the interface will start to tell us what time it is in-game.

    Announcements Section
I created an announcements section for bulletin-board like use. It should only be used to make announcements (not like a message board). This would be used for recruiting, finding old lineage players, player-run events that you guys want to start, bounties on Dep and Test server and whatever you can dream up. We have rules though, so don't abuse it or I'll have to turn it off, and I don't want to!

Here's the first announcement, it will show you what I had in mind:
"Someone is looking for Mary aka LostHope (Depardieu Server). If anyone knows any way of contacting her either through e-mail or some chatting program please let ‘Scott’ (Test Server) or ReDeeMeR (q2redeemer@home.com) know. Please help us find her, she left Lineage a few months ago and we do not know where she is. If Mary gets a chance to read this, please send Scott an e-mail. Thank you."

You will find the announcements section in the menu on the left, as well as under this link:

    Lineage in 2002
Lineage Playforum has a long article at http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051002&kid=1343 and we translated. :)

The current Lineage character graphics are considered to be kind of old school. Lots of people have been interested in seeing customization on their characters to make it more personalized. NC understands this need and plans to update the character graphics this year. Along with the character graphics, the plan to update the background graphics too (such as the scenery, houses, etc.) This update will go in Korean servers at the same time as Episode 11.

By the end of the year, episode 12 will be live. This episode will be the conclusion of the first age of Lineage, and will climax with the introduction of Palace of Aden, the ultimate in castles. Aden collects tax from all other castles, and the ruler of Aden is King of the land. Playforum (and us here at Compendium) hope to bring you dramatic siege reports.

In 2003, the Age of Lord British will begin. It will be episodes 13-18. A separate team is working on it, and it will feature an updated engine. In 2003, Lineage will finally be a "true 3D" game. The Age of Lord British will include a separate land from Aden and national wars are planned between the lands. They do not anticipate increased lag from the introduction of 3D, and all the items we have come to know and love will remain.

They also noted that the US market is not doing so well. They have noticed that the player base doubles upon every episode introduction, so hopefully this will turn out to be promising.

    Lineage 2

Lineage 2 is based on the Unreal engine. It contains 3 countries, with 18 lands total. It will feature things like occupations and battles in the air.

This year, around June, beta testing will begin, and will be expected to conclude by the end of the year. Lineage 2 is expected to be released in 2003.

    Gentile - level 50 mage!!
On Ken server, the first level 50 *anything* has appeared. And he's a mage!

We did a little interview and he told us about himself.

  • He's a CON 18, WIS 18, INT 15 mage. He's got 403HP (with orc ammy) and 444MP. His weapons are a +8 Staff of Force and a +7 Staff of Mana.
  • He hunts in Giran 4f, but also lately MLC 6f for about 6 hours per day. Definitely does *not* use bugbears to hunt. In his words "Lev 50 in 2004 maybe with BB". :)

I have to add his level 50 bonus was very bittersweet. There was no addition of stat, no new spell, no "improved" summon, and the Beleth and Baphomet morphs cannot wear all AC: they cannot wear boots or helm. However, they are fast. They allow you to hit as fast as an elf or a scorpion (which you may not know are the same speed) and cast magic as fast as a king bugbear morph.

Also, he has a plea for NC:

Congratulations Gentile! All of US Lineage is proud of you!

Poseidon on Korean servers: level 58 interview
There's not much to say. Poseidon on Korean servers levelled to 58. Picture worth 1000 words. More details to come if there's anything interesting in the interview.

    http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051003&kid=950

update: amateras picked out some interesting facts out of the Playforum interview.
  • He chose CON for level 56, 57, 58 level ups because he wants to be able to take damage from Antharas and not die killing him. Thus, he regens 8-9HP per tick.
  • He hunts dvc mainly, gets 1% every 3 hours. He takes 4 braves, 3 twigs, 290 reds and a maple wand for use with ropc. He does that 10 times for 1% and ends up spending 16 million adena per level in supplies. He has died about 8 times since level 50.
  • He uses +8 tsurugi. Before that, he was using a +9 rapier. Even before that, he was using a +9 b-kat, but he felt that +9 rapier was a little better, so he switched. He felt +7 tsurugi was about the same as +9 rapier, but +8 tsurugi is much better than +9 rap or +9 b-kat. He says the difference (in duels) between +9 rap and +8 tsu is a difference of 70-100 HP in the end. Also, on -57 AC, he says +8 tsurugi misses less than +9 rap.
  • His MR set is -61 AC. He has a +8 HOMR and +7 COMR. He uses his magic set for DVC 5f and lower.
  • He attends every siege he is asked to go to.
  • His PK count is 480.

    new arena plans from Korea
On the Korean non-PK test server, a new feature was added to the Giran arena. It appears that for 1000 adena (with multiple opportunities every day), you would be able to enter the arena and go through a Cray's-test style test of your strength. The participants would be given monsters to kill and once they were all dead, new, harder monsters would spawn (this includes bosses) and continue to spawn until everyone had left or died. I think this will be lots of fun if it ever makes it out of the Korean test server. ^^

    Prince morph bug
There is a bug that was recently discovered where any character can morph into a prince. It's not really much of a useful morph, just kind of confusing. We were going to post it earlier, but we didn't want to promote the exploitation of it. It appears now everyone knows how to do it. Please don't post how to do it here, I will definitely delete it if you do. Enjoy this screenshot that was sent to us.

    undocumented publish changes
The Giants we mentioned a few days ago on test server are now live on Depardieu and Ken Rauhel servers. They are all in the desert and drop pretty much the same thing as we reported on test server (gloves, being the most interesting) a few days ago. Pretty neat that it went in so fast. Also, the Talking Island/Silver Knight's Town NPCs that spoke of Elindare from the last mini-event now talk about Giants.

Also, you cannot bookmark the Hidden Valley or Singing Island any longer, and all bookmarks placed there have been deleted.

    Korean Dwarf Castle sieges
Lots of people have been telling me to post the Playforum pictures of the first ever Dwarf Castle siege, and I've been saying "I dunno - it's just not relevant to us", but hey, you ask, I post. :)

    from http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051003&kid=945

These two pictures pretty much summarize the unique points of Dwarf Castle. Above, the first screenshot is the hoardes of invaders entering the cave which Dwarf Castle is located in. Everyone goes inside, and then within the cave is an entry chamber which is sealed by the castle gates. Thus, the siege is pretty much underground the whole time, lit by torches. There are two cave entrances, each lead to a separate entry chamber with a separate gate. There are no archers or anything at the gate.

    from http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051003&kid=943

This screenshot is the location of the guardian tower in the center of the udnerground castle. It is alot like Heine and Giran in that there are barriers so that you can't just walk anywhere, and the defenders can place people strategically to block you from getting to the tower. However, it is in a much different shape.

    aggression including COI/SOSC
We added an entry to the Monster Guide in the remarks section. You will notice that there is something like:

Aggressive? YES (to SOSC? YES | to COI? NO)

Laura(one of our team of testers) has recorded lots of data on which monsters are aggressive and to what. In the example above, the mop is aggressive, even if you use SOSC, but cannot see you in COI. As usual, all corrections and additions (there are a few ??) can be sent to us at web@lineagecompendium.com

I am no longer feeling like a important part of the fansite comunity, nor do i feel like i am doing anything to help out compendium stay the best site that it is. I have pondered this over many times and have decided that its best time that I leave the Lineage Compendium. I dont think half the people that come to this site even know i am a part of the site so it doesnt really matter. I am hope you guys are happy with the work i did over the past work with lineage nation and then Lineage compendium. Over the time i have made many enemys and many freinds. well maybe more enemys. I have now become bitter and mean. I am losing my lineage freinds left and right and i dont even care. I dont think I will start or join a new fansite after this. I have changed my name in lineage. So dont go looking for me their. I am now gone. After this post is done i am going to take away my admin powers and delet this account. I guess the frist person that reads this post that wants the name linspatz here at lineage compendium can take it. I wish the best of the staff of lineage compendium. -LinSpatz~~!

    Flute reports on Episode 10
Flute, (which we think is a reporter for Lineage Playforum) noted some interesting observations about episode 10 changes that were not mentioned earlier. (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=1301
    1. In the new fire lands, it is possible that the ground will randomly give way and lava will seep through, poisoning you and causing damage.
    2. In Dragon Valley, you may remember that skeleton marksmen standing on a cliff cannot fire arrows on you. This has now changed. Now, you can fire arrows (and presumably ebolts) through elevation differences. I think this applies to sieges too.
    3. Fog patches (in the new fire land) slow down attack speed.
    4. Elekkadom now has an electrocution attack. (See screenshot below).

    more Korean Test server updates
Lineage Playforum reported (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=1301)even more Korean server updates today.
    1. Dropping items when being PKed is now tied to lawfulness. If you are more chaotic than someone you try to PK, the probability of dropping an item is lower. For example, if a full chaotic player kills a 0 lawful player, the 0 lawful will have a lower probability of dropping an item if a full lawful player killed that same 0 lawful player.
    2. If you attacked a tamed mop or dog in elven forest, the guardians would help you. This is no longer true.
    3. Small adjustments (unclear which direction) were being made to the COI vulnerability we posted about earlier.

    Giant on test server
A new mop was spotted and tamed on US test server after they did a quick update today. The stats are: level 19, 330 HP, 10 MP. It was tamed East of Woodbec.
Update: Rhayde, Makura, Closure, Xarin and others on test server are communicating to me what they drop. So far they say: adena, reds, clubs, large shield, battle axe and gloves. They do about 10-20 damage on -41 AC and every 3 gives 1% at lvl 36. Of course, these numbers aren't exact, but they should give you an idea of what kind of mop this is.

    Lineage is Prime Time, baby
Reece tipped me off to the fact that the January 31, 2002 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine (No Doubt on the cover) has an article on Lineage on page 55. And a favorable one it is!

Click the article to see the screenshot (taken on Ken server) close up

The hottest genre in gaming today has a weird, ungainly name: massively multiplayer online gaming. In games such as EVERQUEST, ASHERON'S CALL and ULTIMA ONLINE, thousands of people participate simultaneously in a virtual world where the action goes on 24/7 - whether you're there or not. Until recently, we figured that EverQuest, which has about half a million subscribers, was the most popular nonpharmaceutical alternative reality on the planet. But turns out there are 4 million gamers adicted to NCsoft's LINEAGE in places such as Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Now this online role-playing phenomenon has reached U.S. shores, led by fabled Ultima creator Richard Gariott - a man also known by his game moniker, Lord British. "The impact this game has had in every country that it's come available in is truly phenomenal," says Gariott, who now serves as executive producer for Korea-based NCsoft. "It started life about three years ago in Korea; now, one out of thirty people in the country plays Lineage. When it launched in Taiwan, it brought own the Internet for the entire country." U.S. gamers may balk at the distinctly old school presentation, with its 2-D graphics and familiar sword-and-sorcery combat. But Garriott says that simplicity works in Lineage's favor. "It's much easier to get into than most online games. Most online games drop you into a gigantic world and say, 'Good luck,' which is very intimidating. Often people are very unsuccessful and preyed upon by other players. This game has a much more comfortable beginning. And instead of feeling like you are truly wimpy - fighting rats and rabbits for the first few months of your existence - you get to wade through lots of monsters and see them fall before you, and get lots of gold and treasure from the beginning, so you feel much more heroic." He also points to the "elder game" experience, in which seasoned players can take over castles, set taxation rates for kingdoms and juggle political relations to maintain their power. And for hard-core gamers, the presence of Lord British himself as a character within the world of Lineage could prove irresistible (Gariott gave up rights to the Ultima name when he left Origin Systems, but the Lord British persona goes where he goes). Unlike other massively multiplayer games, there's no game disk to buy, and there's a free thirty day trial period - check the Web site (lineage-us.com) for details...

    Interesting fact about Giran arena

While Giran arena isn't available for rental in the USA yet, it is in Korea, and someone discovered an interesting little fact. Giran arena is set up to be a Combat Zone, where death does not cause you to drop items or lose experience. However, according to the Playforum article (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=1288), there is a small flaw in the way the arena is set up so that right at the exit of the arena (near the top), there is a Normal Zone. In a normal zone, you *do* drop items, and you *do* lose experience. So, when the arena comes to us -- be careful.

    Korean Test server updates
Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=1286) reported that Korean test servers got two updates recently.

First, a bug with being erupted. If you were erupted by a mage that was lagging, the erupts could stack up so that you just got hit with a triple-power erupt at one moment. They fixed this so that erupts could not stack up.

COI vulnerability has been extended from 3 seconds to 5 seconds. For those that don't know how COI works, if you are in COI, when you come out of COI, you have to wait 3 seconds before you can hit anything. That time has been extended to 5 seconds.

    "Metis" events on Korean servers
Normally, we try to filter out news reported on Playforum that doesn't affect the US servers in any way, but this is kind of cool (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051002&kid=1287). A company called "Metis" (we're not sure about the American spelling) is holding events on the Korean live servers. These events are:
    1. They have randomly distributed "lottery tickets" to all monsters in Lineage. If you get a lottery ticket, you can exchange it with a scroll that they choose.
    2. There is a game where if your name starts with a certain letter, you have to find friends that also have a certain letter, and meet at Giran inn for a prize.
    3. Another game: randomly, representatives of "Metis" will be approaching players at random times and places and asking them questions. If they get it right, they get a prize.
    4. If you miss the above events, there will be more events when they host a Dragon Show in Giran Arena. This will include Antharas, Fafurion and Valakas.
Anyhow, the reason I post that is because I'm jealous. We want fun like that too! :)

    elven wafers
pena on Korean Test server told me that Korean Live servers have had elven wafers available before Episode 10. He hooked me up with some elven wafers on Korean Test, and I did some speed tests with sword swing and bow speed.

Let me preface this with results on Korean Test are NOT necessarily an indication of what rates will make it to the US servers, but, just for your information:

  • Elf with sword + haste vs. Elf with sword + haste + wafer = *same speed*. Wafter had no effect on a hasted elf's sword swing.
  • Elf with bow + haste vs. Elf with bow + haste + wafer = 11% increase in speed. A hasted elf can fire 75 shot/minute. A hasted/wafer elf can fire 83 shots/minute.

This information is now in the morph guide. :)

update: I also added the ability to compare morphs/players in the morph list. Now, you can compare all mops to a "hasted ghast" or a "non-hasted zombie" and see what is faster and slower and by how much. :)

    Welcome Hijiko
Just wanted to make a quick announcement about the newest addition to our "Siege Coverage" team. Please welcome Hijiko, who joins Sarsha and Show as Lineage Compendium's third Depardieu Server siege reporter. You can see their work on the Siege Reports page. If you are sieging in Dep and they are unarmed (means they're just reporting), please don't kill them. :)

    Korean COI
While this is not news, I thought it was an interesting discovery: On one of my Episode 10 trips to the Korean test server, I noticed that the cloak of invisibility (COI) works a bit differently in Korea than in the US. The mage, XCANCELX that is pictured is in COI is speaking and his words are appearing over his head, but his body is not present. In the US implementation, the words only appear in the chat window, and not in the play window.

A small FYI, LinSpatz also found data from Lineage Webszone for inclusion in the Episode 10 monster drop list.

new Elven options on Korean Test
Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=1277) reports that there are 2 new options in the Game Options menu, exclusively for elf, on the Korean Test servers.

Elves can now switch on and off the elven night vision, and level 50+ elves can now switch on and off the fuzzy rotc. Pretty neat ^^

    Gamespot Review of Lineage (ouch)

kyoto found this (recent) review where Gamespot gave Lineage a 5.5 out of 10. Now, lets all accept that it's hard to be a reviewer, especially when reviewing a game which grows on you like Lineage and isn't filled with in-your-face razzle-dazzle and is all downhill from there. So, let's just shake our heads with pity at Gamespot for their short-sightedness. ^^

    renting the arena
Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=1273) did some more research on renting Giran arena.

The way it works is very simple. It costs 550a for the prince to purchase each participant's ticket (max is 60, 59 participants + prince), 100a to purchase a spectator ticket, and the prince gets 50% of all spectator tickets sold. So, now princes can become event promoters. I hope this adds as much to the social aspect of Lineage as it sounds like it will. ^^

We posted earlier, but let me repeat - no experience loss, no item drops. I think the arena will be fun. ^^

    Ep. 10 monster drops.
Lineage PlayForum has been researching what the new monsters drop. Although there is no information yet on the frequency of the drops, they are now all in the Monster Guide. Lineage PF constantly updates the drop list, so as we notice changes, we will update as well.

Also, Lineage PF posted another set of images (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051003&kid=913) about the recent attack on Valakas. Notice that Valakas casts Meteor Strike:

    new info
The new monsters from Episode 10 (all of them are level 20+) have been added to the Monster Guide. We'll add their locations/drops/descriptions as we find and translate them. Valakas is SO strong. :(

Also important to note, NC-Korea added tsurugi to their weapons list, and made it one-handed. Looks like the new boss weapon is in town. ^^

Also here is the obligatory screenshot of the Koreans attempting to kill Valakas from Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051003&kid=911)

    Lineage on MacOS
According to Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051003&kid=909), NCSoft has developed a version of Lineage for MacOS (they've been working on it as early as April 1999, based on our research on the web), which they are showing off at Mac World Expo, currently in San Francisco. They hope to be done with the port to MacOS in early February.

test server event, right before the full wipe
Right before they wiped the test server clean earlier this month, Lord Cutter unleashed all the baddies in Giran town. Antharas was actually killed, as well as most of this creatures. In fact, some people got to hold the legendary tsurugi drop, as well as other fun. It was a slaughter, most people died 10+ times (it helps to restart right at the fight).

Rhayde sent in 3 pretty cool screenshots, go to the screenshot section to see. :)

    Lineage Models
NCsoft has made lineage models relating to lineage chars. For some odd reason they are all female. You can get the Female Elf, Female Knight, and Female Sorceress. These models you have to put together yourself. You can get your own modle for 85,000 won or roughly 64.09$ Click here for a picture of all three. This news was taken from Lineage Webzone

    Monster Drop List
We have begun integrating the drops list found on the chinese site to our monsters database. I myself have taken over this task. But I am asking for your help. Right now there are monsters which I do not have drop lists for, and I need your help to fill these in. If a monster drops something which wasn't listed, or if the drop rates doesn't seem correct, please email me at linspatz@lineagecompendium.com

    Test Server Wipe (Jan 2)
In the course of game development work for Lineage a design change was implemented on the Test database which the external Test Server was using. Unfortunately, this change caused reduced performance and introduced duping into the Test Server. As soon as this was discovered, Test DB changes were rolled back to match existing production specifications. This change will improve performance and block duping on the Test Server. This will result in a complete wipe of the test server, including character information. This event only affects the US test server, and not Depardieu or Ken Rahuel. This will take effect today: January 02, 2002.

Septonian and Tiamat found this weird drop list on a Chinese site (http://home.kimo.com.tw/mitac999/) and translated it into English. Normally, we would just dismiss something like this as speculative and filled with lies, but it sure SEEMS correct. So, you can be the judge.

For the curious, there were some holiday events in Hong Kong, as reported by hklineage.com and Online Gameplayers magazine (and translated by DaFish and ElfBlue):

For New Years, ogres invaded Giran City: the webmaster describes it as more spectacular than a siege.

Between 12/31 11:30 pm to 1/1 11:30 pm, there was a New Year Event held on Hong Kong Server. In that period of time, werewolf, goblin and gremlin dropped Mana Potion (Blue Potion) in a low probability. Each Blue potion can restore 50-70 MP.

    World Map
I created a composite of all the maps in Aden (except Hidden Valley/Singing Island) and made a map of the Known Universe. This map includes the new Episode 10 area, so you know where it is relative to the world.

In addition, you will find bridges the new rivers and bridges that were added in Giran, Heine and will be added in Weldern, but are not added to the maps. I was always annoyed that the SKT->Heine bridge, the SKT->Giran bridge and the Giran->DV bridge are not present in the in-game maps, so now you should see them. ^^

    Aden, as we know it

Also, I made a little overview of the teleport NPCs and the costs (at the minimum tax rate: 10%) to teleport you around Aden. Obviously, increased tax rates increase the cost, but this is what the total price is based on.
