Halloween event on US Test Server
It is the same one as we reported earlier on the Korean servers.

A quick recap - Jack-O-Lantern's (level 20) are running rampant across Aden since it's Halloween. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to kill as many of them as possible and retrieve the pumpkin seeds. There is a super-strong Jack-O-Lantern (level 45) running around -- how strong? Let's let the NPC describe:

However, I think that's a bit of an overestimate. I used my level 30 Knight, AC -18, +3 Katana, hasted, braved, spartoi morph and I was able to kill him pumping 25 oranges -- however, the Jack-O-Lantern has 2 attacks. A normal attack and this huge attack which did about 200HP on me. Two of those in a row and you're in trouble (however, it is very slow, so that's unlikely). :( I felt like I was in a siege and someone pulled out a dice dagger.

Drops: You have to be careful here. First, you have to give it a Pumpkin Candy and he has to eat it. Only if he eats it and you kill it will you get a pumpkin seed. If you don't feed it a Pumpkin Candy, you can still kill it, but you get *no drop*. On test server, the level 20 Jack-O-Lantern drops 3 Pumpkin Seeds. The level 45 Jack-O-Lantern drops 1 Giant Pumpkin Seed. TaiMaiShu and I 2:1 one of the larger Jack-O-Lanterns and neither of us got a drop. I fed it the Pumpkin Candy, however, I died, was resurrected and we finished it off together. This means one of two things: (1) You have to kill it alone or (2) the Pumpkin Candy giver cannot die while fighting the Jack-O-Lantern.

To fight these evil Jack-O-Lanterns, you need to (1) be wearing the Halloween Mask (its a helmet which safely goes to +4) to see them and (2) put down a Pumpkin Candy which the Jack-O-Lantern must take. Then, kill em.

In case you forgot what to do with the seeds (it's only been a few days!) here's a reminder. The Jack-O-Lantern NPC (in town) will trade you seeds for pumpkins: 1 Giant Pumpkin Seed = 10 Pumpkin Seeds; 10 Pumpkin Seeds = Bronze Pumpkin; 25 Pumpkin Seeds = Silver Pumpkin; 50 Pumpkin Seeds = Golden Pumpkin. Double-clicking on a pumpkin will give you a random item (the better the pumpkin, the more likely a good item).

So far, I've collected 1 Golden Pumpkin and it gave me 1 Pumpkin Seed. :(

So -- collect pumpkin seeds, cash in pumpkin seeds for pumpkins, break open the pumpkins for a surprise! Good luck!

Also, to get you in the Halloween spirit, there are Polymorph NPCs in town which will morph you into Succubus, Yeti, Minotaur, Giant, Death. We saw these morphs when the Heine event in progress and people figured out how to morph to them. In my brief testing, they were no better than spartoi.

However, there is an extra holiday morph, Jack-O-Lantern. He doesn't hit very quickly (when Jack-O-Lantern is hasted, it hits as fast as an unhasted Orc Fighter) however his speed is amazing. When hasted, it is as fast as hasted Arachnevil morph, which, if you didn't know is *faster* than hasted Baphomet/Beleth morph. Since hasted shelob morph is one of the fastest moving morphs in the game, we have a nice speed going here. ;) However, you can only equip a cloak and a weapon. Ironically, you can't even equip the halloween mask -- it's just a fun morph.

The Jack-O-Lanterns are not exactly common, but they are not rare like the sneaky fox. I've seen them in Oren Wasteland as well as nearby Silver Knight's Town. It's approximately Gnoll Event rate.

DroidKnight got a "Pumpkin Toss" from one of the Pumpkins (I, on the other hand, got a Pumpkin Seed back from a Golden Pumpkin). It's a helm that when worn, morphs you into Jack-O-Lantern (and unequips the appropriate items).

Finally, there are Grim Reapers (level 35). The GM said that they spawned in 4 dungeons. These dungeons appear to be MLC 4-6, Ivory Tower 6-7, SKT 3-4 and DVC (any help here?). Grim Reapers are like level 35 version of Death. Make sure you squeeze any hit bonus you can out of your enchants and weapons to fight them. As for drops, best item I got so far is ndai, tqd appears to be a credible rumor and someone says they got ROPC. These guys are heavily camped - if you find yourself frustrated by events where a large number of people are trying to kill a rare monster, stay away from this one. You will be frustrated, I guarantee.

Weapon Identification Enhancement
Jude1004.com reports (http://www.jude1004.com/news/index.asp?pg=/news/view.asp&cts_id=2870) that on the Korean servers, your weapon now displays it's enchant level when you identify it for Spirit Magic as well as Normal Magic -- if it is enchanted with Wind Shot, Fire Weapon, etc. However, it only displays the Damage Bonus, not the Hit Bonus.

New Quests coming to Korean Test - also, the fall of racing?
Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=2735) reported that two NPCs have new text popping up on the Korean Test servers, however what they tell you is cryptic.

The first NPC text that changed is the Elven Mother Tree - she tells you that you need to find the Fairy Princess who will give you an Elven Forest Rite of Passage Document. If you bring that document back to the Mother Tree, she will give you some item, but she doesn't specify what item.

The second NPC text that changed is Talass in the Ivory Tower. Now, when you click on "Tell me about Sayha's Bow", he comments that your staff is missing something. He also mentions that he can add it to your staff, but you need to bring him an undead bone piece. It's not clear if it's the same thing as a Bone Piece (probably not) or even what Staff he's talking about or what he's going to do to it..

Finally, the Dog Racing and Slime Racing NPCs now say that they are closing up shop and won't let you make bets any more. Presumably, this is related to the 18+ rating in Korea. Hopefully, this change will not come to the US. T_T

'Lineage' Revised to Be Teen Friendly
NCSoft's president has presented the planned changes to Lineage so that they could obtain a teen rating by the KSRB. These changes will probably have no effect on the US, since we already got a "T for Teen" rating.

One interesting change is that NC is planning to get rid of item drop on death in Korea.

ValiantGuppy's +10 Tsurugi
This was initially kept a secret and my reporters were sworn to secrecy, but after much convincing, ValiantGuppy agreed to an interview. Meet the first +10 Tsurugi on the live servers.

ValiantGuppy bought a +7 Tsurugi one day on the Aden Global Market, and using only 3 n-dai, enchanted it to +10. That's putting 225,000 adena to great use! I asked him to meet me in Gludio, but it looks like there was a bounty on his head by the guards, so we decided to meet in the lawless Orc Town.

When I arrived, there was an air of suspicion. A villager lay dead next to ValiantGuppy and his armed escort, KnightRyDuZ was laughing at her misfortune.

ValiantGuppy is indeed being hunted by Guards all across Aden, as he is not fully lawful. However, he is not worried as he once was. He credits his sense of security to his Cloak of Invisibility and a strong pledge, ReAnimated, who will defend this weapon to their death. When you attack ValiantGuppy, you can expect to see his pledge brothers moments later.

Amer: so you will keep it?
ValiantGuppy: yeah, I'm planning on keeping it.
KnightRyDuZ: he trade it for my +9 kakak
Amer: hehe
Amer: what is your pk count at?
ValiantGuppy: 238
Amer: nice ^^ that should make people think twice
ValiantGuppy: ya =)
ValiantGuppy: but my pking days are over
ValiantGuppy: well.. for now =)
KnightRyDuZ: wuss~
Amer: lol, you get +10 tsu and its' over?
ValiantGuppy: no
ValiantGuppy: gonna rest for 2 weeks
Amer: hehe
ValiantGuppy: then start again =)
ValiantGuppy: aimming for 300
Amer: give people chance to prepare ;)
Amer: well gl!
Amer: and its nice to have good strong pledge to help protect
ValiantGuppy: yup =)

He wanted to acknowledge some of his friends in his moment of fame:
"ReA pledge, Pepper, and to all those that have healed me while i pked =), Brutus, Ryduz(all of them), Clayton, Ky0suke, Taera, to everyone he forgets to mention and lastly... shouts to Brian without him... i wouldn't be using this tsu"

The power behind the Aden throne reveals the world of Lineage
Just found this interview done last week by GameZone Online with Lance Stites (aka captsturm on the #lineage Stratics HoC chats) posted on Lineage Stratics. Nothing new, it's more of a "What is Lineage?" interview for people who are interested in getting into it.

New HoF look
The page is getting big with everyone reaching Level 50 on all the servers. So, now, when you click on the Hall of Fame, you will see a summary chart of all the 50+ by class, level and server. (The server is the color-coding, red for Dep, blue for Ken, green for Test)

Clicking on a category or name will give you a filtered look, for example, to see all the level 51 players, click "51". To click the Dep players click "Dep Server". To see all the level 52 Knights on Dep click the number 17 (currently the number of level 52 knights on Dep)

I know some of you wiseguys are going to say "but there are 18 knights, but there are 2 mages" yeah yeah, we only post what information people are willing to give. We're not psychics.

New Section: Lineage Spotlight
I've promised a lot of people and my reporters this section for a few weeks now and now that I've finally moved into my new place I've been able to finish it. (Now for alot of unpacking ;)

Behold, the new LC Spotlight section. Every week, we'll bring you a new interview with a person or a pledge, and unlike the front news page, it could be anyone from the level 1 player who is the first to play using his feet to a pledge filled with people with the highest AC on the server.

Enjoy the new section!

NewWind hits 52 on Dep

A pat on the back is what NewWind, the newest level 52 knight on Depardiu, deserves. He has hunted basically non-stop for the last week, getting only eight hours of sleep and finally being rewarded with the level up on October 20th.

NewWind is a CON knight, though at levels 51 and 52 he opted to add strength, giving him a total of 18. His +9 Katana does more then a little damage, and he should probably have the title “Mage’s Nightmare” with his –60 ac MR set. It isn’t every day you find one of those!

He hunts in Fire Valley, due to the good experience and drops. He partakes in a bit of boss hunting, his favorites being Demons and Death Knights. Though he hasn’t gotten any good drops from them lately he boasts a record of two rings of teleport control from MOP.

He had 25 lag deaths from 49-52, 6 of them being from 51-52. This just goes to show you not to give up!

He plans to keep going to 53 with some major power leveling though not half as frenzied as his level 51 work. His only complaints to NC is the major lag/disconnections (though he blames his ISP for most of it) and that he really wants Forgotten Island.

He’d like to give thanks to his brother for his support and, oddly enough, to me for the interview. I’m touched!

Best of luck to NewWind on his future adventures and best of luck to you CON knights aiming for the big 5-2! Just remember, it can be done!

Bam hits 52
A couple of days ago, Bam on the Depardieu server reached lvl 52. He's a STR knight (bet you didn't guess that eh? =P) that's been around since Dep was introduced to the US (!). This obviously makes him very old, and he said himself that he's delevelled from lvl 49 many times, which would explain his low MP. Without any amulets or belts he has 529 HP and 48 MP. This can be compared to my old knight which had 48 MP at level 46.

But as we can see, it hasn't stopped him from reaching lvl 52 =). Once he stopped dying it took him one month per level (thus making it 3 months to reach 52 from lvl 49), plus the reason he did it was because everyone else was. Just following the flow so to speak. He's only died one time during these three months too.

He usually hunts FV and DV, and before he reached his current level he was using the Baphomet morph because of its speed. This seems to be a common practice for any non-elves that are over level 50. The loss of AC seems to be weighed up by the ungodly running speed of the Bapho and Beleth morph.

Now that he has the DK morph though, his AC is -64. When asked what weapons he uses, he replied +9 Rapier and +8 Katana, which surprised me since I thought most high lvl knights were using Tsu.

His other two characters are both above lvl 48 aswell. As I asked how many times he's died he stood there thinking for a while, and replied that it's happened too many times before lvl 49 to remember, and as I said above, he delevelled at lvl 49 a few times.

Bam would like to thanks the following as well:

And by everyone he means literally EVERYONE, since so many have been nice to him by either earth skinning, fire weaponing, healing etc etc.

He did however, have no complaints to NC.

That's all for now, Congratulations Bam! And I'll seeya'll in the next interview.

SoulScream out.

NC - Korea Halloween Event
Normally we don't post about events in other countries (well, we stopped in June 2002). The reason for this is that events rarely occur in more than one country. When we have an event, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and China never see it, and the same when they have an event. It's more up to the NC division of each country on what kind of events we have. Anyway, point is, we don't post it because it always creates a bunch of "OMG HOW COME WE NEVER GET EVENTS" when people completely forget that we DO get events.

However, we're going to give you some background on the Halloween event because it introduces a new item that we've never seen before.

In the Korean Halloween event, an NPC named "Jack-0-Lantern" is in every town in Aden. He says that there are evil, imposter "Jack-0-Lanterns" wandering around and offers to give you a prize if you kill the imposters. They can also poison you.

However, the imposters are invisible. There are only two ways to see the imposter (1) if you drop a special Halloween candy (100a each, weight 1) on the ground, the imposter will see it, pick it up and appear (2) there is a special Halloween mask (1000a each, weight 25) that when used will allow you to see imposter Jack-0-Lanterns. [I couldn't tell if it was a lantern, a potion or a helmet to be worn -am]

Killing a Jack-0-Lantern will drop pumpkin seeds. There are two strengths of Jack-0-Lanterns - normal and difficult. You won't know which is which until you fight it. :)

You need to collect a certain number of seeds to get your prize. 10 seeds will get you a bronze pumpkin. 25 seeds will get you a silver pumpkin. 50 seeds will get you a gold pumpkin. You may also find a giant pumpkin seed, which can be converted to 10 regular seeds.

Breaking open the pumpkin will result in an item. All pumpkins could break open to reveal healing potions, haste potions, blank scrolls, polymorph scrolls and resurrect scrolls. However, the gold pumpkin has also dropped White Dragon Scale, Red Dragon Armor, White Dragon Armor, Elven Wafer, Scroll of Enchant Weapon, Scroll of Enchant Armor and the new item which is the whole point of this post:

Elven T-Shirt. AC 0, weight 5, can be safely enchanted to +6 and can only be used by Elves.

Re: Enchanting Items:
What is the safe enchant limit for bone/non-Elven/Elven items?
Each item of armor and weapon in Lineage has a “safe” enchant limit; this is the level to which an item can be enchanted with no risk of destroying said item.
  • Bone armor has no safe enchant limit; players run the risk of blowing up bone items with the first attempt at enchanting. The chance to successfully over-enchant bone armor is 1 over the current enchant level+2:
  • Non-Elven armor has a safe enchant limit of +4; this includes the Bracer, Boots, and Power Gloves.
  • The Red Knight’s Hood has a safe enchant limit of +6.
  • Elven armor has a safe enchant limit of +6; this includes the Bless of Elm, Elven Helm of Dexterity, and Elven Helm of Constitution.
  • Weapons can be safely enchanted to +6.
What are the chances of getting +1/+2/+3 when using a Blessed Scroll of Enchant Armor/Weapon?
*Please keep in mind that any time you attempt to enchant past the item’s safe limit, you also have a chance of destroying the item you are attempting to enchant.

Using a Blessed Scroll of Enchant Armor on an item has the chance to improve the AC from 1 to 3, depending on the current enchant status of the item. The higher the existing enchant, the lower the chance of a higher enchant amount.

Examples:

  • If an item starts at +0 to +2, you have a 33% chance of increasing by 1, by 2 or by 3.
  • If an item starts at +3 to +5, you have a 50% chance of increasing by 1 or by 2.
  • If an item starts at +6 to +8, you have a chance of increasing by 1.
  • If an item starts at +9 or higher, you have a chance of increasing by 0 or an increasingly smaller chance of increasing by 1, depending on the starting enchant of the armor.
Using a Blessed Scroll of Enchant Weapon on an item has the chance to improve the additional damage dealt from 1 to 3, depending on the current enchant status of the item.

What is the % chance of over-enchanting armor and weapons?
*Please keep in mind that any time you attempt to enchant past the item’s safe limit, you also have a chance of destroying the item you are attempting to enchant.

Using a Blessed Scroll of Enchant Armor/Blessed Scroll of Enchant Weapon will not improve your chances for over-enchanting.

Bone armor has no safe enchant limit; players run the risk of destroying bone items with the first attempt at enchanting.

Examples:

  • A piece of bone armor cannot be safely enchanted, you have a 1 in 2 (50%) chance of enchanting it to +1; you have a 1 in 2 (50%) change of destroying the item.
  • If a piece of bone armor is over-enchanted to +1, you have a 1 in 3 (approximately 33%) chance of over-enchanting to +2; you have a 2 in 3 (approximately 67%) change of destroying the item.
  • If a piece of bone armor is over-enchanted to +2, you have a 1 in 4 (25%) chance of over-enchanting to +3; you hve a 3 in 4 (75%) chance of destroying the item.
Non-Elven armor has a safe enchant limit of +4; this includes the Bracer, Boots and Power Gloves; the Red Knight’s Hood is an exception to this rule, it can be safely enchanted to +6. The chance to successfully over-enchant non-Elven armor is 1 over the current enchant level:

Examples:

  • If a piece of non-Elven armor is safely enchanted to its max safe enchant level of +4, you have a 1 in 4 (25%) chance of enchanting it to +5; you have a 3 in 4 (75%) chance of destroying the item.
  • If a piece of non-Elven armor is over-enchanted to +5, you have a 1 in 5 (20%) chance of enchanting it to +6; you have a 4 in 5 (80%) chance of destroying the item.
  • If a piece of non-Elven armor is over-enchanted to +6, you have a 1 in 6 (approximately 17%) chance of enchanting it to +7; you have a 5 in 6 (approximately 83%) chance of destroying the item.

Elven armor has a safe enchant limit of +6; this includes the Bless of Elm, Elven Helm of Dexterity, and Elven Helm of Constitution. The chance to successfully over-enchant Elven armor is 1 over the current enchant level:

Examples:

  • If a piece of Elven armor is safely enchanted to its max safe enchant level of +6, you have a 1 in 6 (approximately 17%) chance of enchanting it to +7; you have a 5 in 6 (approximately 83%) chance of destroying the item.
  • If a piece of Elven armor is over-enchanted to +7, you have a 1 in 7 (approximately 14%) chance of enchanting it to +8; you have a 6 in 7 (approximately 86%) chance of destroying the item.

Weapons have a safe enchant limit of +6. The chance to successfully over-enchant weapons is 1 in 3 (approximately 33%):

Examples:

  • If a weapon is safely enchanted to its max safe enchant level of +6, you have a 1 in 3 (approximately 33%) chance of enchanting it to +7; you have a 2 in 3 (approximately 67%) chance of destroying the item.
  • If a weapon is over-enchanted to +7, you have a 1 in 3 (approximately 33%) chance of enchanting it to +8; you have a 2 in 3 (approximately 67%) chance of destroying the item.
  • If a weapon is over-enchanted to +8, you have a 1 in 3 (approximately 33%) chance of enchanting it to +9; you have a 2 in 3 (approximately 67%) chance of destroying the item.

On the topic of the KSRB 18+ rating on Lineage:
As for the discussion at hand, please remember - in the US, Lineage has received a Teen rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) as noted in the lower right corner of every page of this website. That's the only rating of the game that affects US players in any way.

Additionally, as previously noted in this thread, the North American server does not allow new account creation from territories that are already served by Lineage servers.

On whether or not the magic arrows fired by Sayha's bow will be treated like arrow damage or magic damage:
The "magic" arrow attack doesn't fire magic arrows. The "magic" factor is simply that the bow fires arrows when you don't have any physical arrows in inventory.

Online Videogame Research Study
I got an email from a grad student up in Calgary who is doing some research on MMOG players. If you'd like to help him out, he has a 23-question survey about your thoughts on gaming, Lineage and your play style. If you are interested, read and reply to his email.
Lineage Players:

My name is Nils Olson. I am a Graduate Student attending the University Calgary in the department of Communications Studies. At present, I am researching online role-playing games. I am attempting to gather as much information from the perspective of players as possible. Only a small amount of research has been completed regarding videogames and most of this has focused on very negative themes such as aggression and violence in players.

As an avid videogame player I am disappointed in the type of research being produced. With this in mind I am focused on contextualizing videogame research in player experiences and understandings. In my present research I am focusing on studying online games using Lineage as a case study. I have compiled surveys consisting of 20 open-ended questions designed to help gather a variety of different player understandings of Lineage.

The survey will take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour to complete depending on how much you want to write. If you are interested in participating please send an email to Nils at nkolson@ucalgary.ca.

Thanks.

10/21 - Korean Test server observations
Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=2673) reported some new findings on the Korean Test server:
  1. Use of Maple Wand on others will turn you pink.
  2. Death Knight morph has been lowered to 45+, presumably to encourage people to explore Forgotten Island.

Let's review why Forgotten Island is harder - so far:

  1. You can't teleport away.
  2. Potions cost much more than normal.
  3. Adena doesn't drop.
  4. Monsters are much faster and stronger than normal and almost 70% higher in level.
  5. Dark Elves are there.
  6. You cannot fire arrows over cliffs.
  7. The exit is not always available, if you can get to it.

It currently takes a level 46 hasted/wafered Elf with +9 crossbow, -5x AC about 500 oranges and 25 minutes (the duration of 5 wafers) to kill the Forgotten Island Drake. Said the PF reporter "Is it supposed to be like Valakas or something?"

(The DK 45+ thing is just a temporary "Please Help Us Test Forgotten Island" thing. Its not coming here)

12+ Hour Outage?
We went down unexpectedly and came back unexpectedly. The whole thing was out of my control and no one ever spoke to me about it, but it looks like whoever got in this morning just restarted mysql and that was it. God I wish I had root access to this box sometimes. Oh well, hopefully one day we can afford a colocated server.

update: No one has told me what the problem is so I can't be sure the site won't go down again. T_T stay tuned.

Daylight Savings Time ends
As a reminder to US and European Lineage players – Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, October 27th at 2:00 AM (1:00 AM for European Union customers using Summer time.) Please note that this time change will not affect the Lineage servers as the game time operates independent of server time. However, if you live in an area that follows Daylight Saving Time (or EU Summer time), in-game siege times will take place one hour earlier following the time change.

BeBi reaches 52

(Please keep the Dep vs Ken nonsense off this post, ty)

What do the numbers 5 and 17 have in common? Well if you put the month October in from of them, they are the dates of Ken's most powerful achievements to date. A prince, a knight and an elf have finally become level 52.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who these people are. Yes, they are Marak2001, HERC and BeBi. You may remember them from past interviews of mine (except HERC, Ramada got him ). Both HERC and BeBi insisted on being interviewed until they were 52, skipping level 51. Bebi hit level 52 only a few hours after Herc.

Alot has changed since that day when these fine heros were only level 50. I'm not going to restate the nerfs i said in Marak's interview, because it isn't a good thought. BeBi has changed a lot since level 50. At level 51.66 he stopped playing for 2-3 weeks. You must be thinking of a lag death of some sort, but it was something more painful. He got into a little accident.

Bebi in real life was testing out his skills on a CBR 250RR. Everything was ok, until he hit a curb and flew off the bike, which landed on his leg. He got minor scratches and bruises. He's almost recovered now. But, what does this got to do with lineage? Well, after this accident, he blew most of his items. Yumi, rapier, ac all went to thin air, except a MB. Believe it or not, he spent his last 34% using a +6 Hunter bow, then got a +6 yumi and then a +9 Yumi. He traded the +9 MB and 4m of items for the +9 Yumi.

Bebi hasn't recovered yet from his AC lost. He uses a +9 Yumi and the spell you love to hate, Nature's Blessing. Let me reitterate what you already know. He's a con elf with the elemental line Water. He added +1 to dex @ level 51 and +1 str @ level 52. It took 2 months to level up from 51-52. An interesting thing is he got the last 34% in 5 days, playing almost 16 hours a day, while hunting in DVC and FV.

"I was really into it" - BeBi

BeBi wants to thank all his close friends (Heres a List) : Thah, Tai, David, HOC, khiem, Giang, Bao, hung, Keit and his princess Bunny!

Also all the elves that skinning, windshot, fireweaponed him all the way. And Finally all the great mages that healed him.

"Thank you all and wish you great success in lineage" - BeBi

Well that a wrap. Huggashi interview coming soon.

Death Knight/Dark Elf speed videos
XRenatoX and HERC got together at a twin drake spawn, and XRenatoX shot some videos of DK and DE for archival purposes in case anyone needs to refer to them. They were not trying to demonstrate the speed of DK and DE. We know there are plenty of level 52 players. We also had an event where everyone could be DK and DE. Yes, this has been done before. In fact, we posted it here the last time, remember? If not, back in June, Briel made the same video with DK/ghast: LC News #695. Now, XRenatoX has re-done it so we have a copy to fondly look back on when we get curious. Also, back then there was no Dark Elf level 52 morph. The old Dark Elf morph was slow.

XRenatoX noted that HERC had some lag, especially in the dark elf video, but he more than makes up for it when it clears up.

Thin reaches 52
Just over a month ago Thin a strength knight on Depardieu server, hit level 51. He didn’t rush; he was much more occupied with getting his armor class up and having a good time. Just like 51, another level has snuck up on Thin. On October 16th, 2002, Thin hit level 52.

Using a +8 rapier and –55 armor class Dragon Valley Beach, Thin’s favorite hunting spot, is no trouble at all. He gets enough experience there to be happy, though as he said in his level 50 interview he is more concerned with getting better armor.

He’s very laggy, buy not laggy enough that he’s dying. In fact, he had no deaths between 51 and 52 and only three deaths total between 49 and 52. Wow! He has no complains about NC other then the lag and thinks they are doing a pretty good job. At least someone does!

He’d like to say “Thank you all in DV!” and also give thanks to his pledgemates.

HERC reaches 52
HERC, the leveling monster from Ken server made level 52 on October 17, 2002. I had the opportunity to interview him at the new and improved Talking Island Inn the next day, and here's what he had to say:

Ramada: How long did it take you to get from 1 to 52?
HERC: About 3 months
Ramada: And how long from 50 to 51, and 51 to 52?
HERC: From 49 to 50, it took 16 days, from 50 to 51 about 35 days cuz of 4 deaths, and from 51 to 52, about 3 weeks with one death.
Ramada: The time that it took you was, well, astounding....what would you attribute that to?
HERC: Maybe more used to dealing with dull hunting I guess.....hehe
Ramada: So dedication more or less?
HERC: Obviously you need to be dedicated and focused, and need patience.
Ramada: I've also noticed that you don't shy away from seiges the way many power levelers do...I find that to be an admirable trait.
HERC: Siege is a big part of this game, why would I miss that fun? =P
Ramada: Ok, what 's your ac and weaponry?
HERC: I don't want to be too specific, but let's put -6x and +8 tsu.....T_T I was trying to get +9 tsu, but blew 25m, and got nothing
Ramada: I know that when I power level, I start running short on cash, how do you keep the funds rolling in?
HERC: I sometimes hunt bosses like dk, Ice Queen and Demon, thanks to the 87 Babo Club members....hehe And I get ok money just hunting fv.
Ramada: So most of your normal hunting is in fire valley?
HERC: Pretty much, yes. Like 90% of my exp I got from fv.
Ramada: Any advice out there for future Death Knights?
HERC: I know many people are level 49, the best thing is never to give up when you die. I know it's very frustrating, but that's what you have to overcome.
Ramada: Anything else?
HERC: I just want to say that anyone can do it if you are dedicated, and good luck to all the high level players who are dreaming about dk =)
Ramada: What are your current stats, and where have you put your new stats into?
HERC: I started as 16 con/ 18 str knight.....sort of a mixture of con and str -_- Then I added 2 points to str, so I have 20 str/16 con now.
Ramada: Interesting choice....what are you averaging for hps/level?
HERC: 9 to 11, I have 600+ hp with items.
Ramada: How does that hold up in duels against pure con knights?
HERC: My stats are not the best for non-pot duels, which I think are meaningless.
Ramada: Good point....>
HERC: I like my stats cuz I am like str knight with 100 more hp's.
Ramada: What are your goals now?
HERC: Umm, that's the question I've been asking since I hit dk, maybe make some money with boss hunts, get more ac and better weapons. Then I think I'll level up again. Let me tell ya, adding stats is a lot of fun!....hehe
Ramada: Ok, and who would you like to thank for helping along the way?
HERC: Fyreblade, Cronus, Bluebell, Sexmonkey, Huggashi, xrenatox, Marak, Smoochie, Skada, Sassie, and Ramada. Also, all members of InfinityCircle, Shaolin and 87 Babo Club. I'm worried I will miss someone...hehe
Ramada: I'm sure they'll underststand....^.^ Is there anything else you'd like to say?
HERC: You know I have a level 50 mage.
Ramada: TuffBuff
HERC: I just want to say NC should stop nerfing mages.
Ramada: I agree, haven't touched my mage much lately either
HERC: Ya
Ramada: Any plans to try to get an elf to 50?....lol
HERC: I will stick with my knight I think. I also want to wish good luck to Bomelith, Facade and Toyknight, I see them all the time in fv.
Ramada: Thanks for taking the time bro.
HERC: It was fun.

Earlier today, HERC died due to a d/c caused by some outage in a network in Texas (many people d/ced simultaneously) and delevelled to 51. =(

But not to worry -- he'll be back by Sunday. :) Congrats from LC!

DORIANvsALL hits 52
DORIANvsALL is a name that most Depardieu players would know, and DorianKie is a name that most veterans would know. As you might have guessed, the two are one and the same. As you might not have guessed, Dorian recently reached the level of fifty-two on his knight.

Between stealing castles, attacking enemies and having fun, Dorian was able to get the level up on October 11th. With seven lag deaths it took him just over a month to get from 51 to 52 — I wish I was that dedicated!

He added to his strength at both level ups, giving him a base of 22 and a grand spanking 30 with items and spell. That walloping strength packed with his +8 tsurugi, +9 rapier and –65 armor class(base) makes DORIAN a bad opponent to choose during a fight.

He hunts mainly in Fire Valley and Dragon Valley Caves — the succubus floors only, of course. His favorite boss though is Death Knight... I believe the Death Knights will be rather surprised when DORIAN arrives in DK morph and gives them a brother-to-brother beating.

DORIAN would like to give thanks to (take a breath, it’s a long list!): EstingerReve, TPM, xpknewbx, THEBESTB0Y, HADEZ, gorbad, tungusca, malfo and oddly…all the mages who ever cancel him in Fire Valley :)

10/17 - Korean Test update
Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=2645) reports the following changes published to the Korean Test servers on 10/17:

  1. Blessed Teleport Scrolls and the Elven Level 50 Teleport bonus will now land within 1 screen of the bookmarked location. Ring of Teleport Control still hits the bookmark dead-on.
  2. Penalties for using Chaotic spells now do not apply in Safe Zones or Free PK Zones. [I think we call that "Combat Zone" -am]
  3. Colosseum difficulty increased slightly.
  4. AC of Ancient Plate Mail changed from -15 AC to -16 AC.
  5. Sayha's bow animation changed (this is much better than it was the last time they changed it).

Lineage rated 18+ in Korea
Reported on news.naver.com (http://news.naver.com/news_read.php?oldid=2002101700000354044&s=41,130,334&e=103,207,409):

The Korean-equivalent of the ESRB, (which, in the US, rates game content such as T for Teen, M for Mature, etc) has rated Lineage 18+, to NC's dissappointment. This means that game rooms in Korea (which is where a large majority of Lineage players play) will now not allow players to play Lineage if they are not 18 years old.

NC said that they were hoping for a 12+ rating, and have been changing content to make it more teen-friendly, such as Lineage Tournament to curb real-life violence, graphics changes, etc. Some of the reasons cited by the ratings group were addiction, violence and gambling/real-money trades.

30% of Korean Lineage players are 14 or younger, which is quite a large number of players. The article did not mention the impact of this change on other countries, or what NC was planning to do about it.

Korean Test Server files - New Items and NPCs

Chama reports (http://www.chama.to) that the Korean Test server got a few new item pictures and item names in the latest update. They seem to be a combination of a Halloween Event, another event and possibly some Episode 12 items/NPCs. Before you get too excited, remember that (1) not all events in Korea make it to the US in time (2) not all items discovered by looking at the files ever make it to even Korean Test. We were able to match some to their names, and the rest we leave to you ;)

Items that we could match:
Potion of Revival Candy for Jack Pumpkin Head Copper Pumpkin Silver Pumpkin Gold Pumpkin

Jack-O'Lantern Pumpkin Lantern Big Pumpkin Seed Pumpkin Seed Ramia's Scale

Items we couldn't match :)

Undead Key, Secret Room Key, Arachnevil Elder’s Claw, Letter of Thanks, Relics of Village Inhabitants, Raw Spirit Stone, Cursed Spirit Scroll, Zombie Key, Skeleton Key, Bone of Undead, Bone Piece of Undead, Shield of Red Knight

New NPCs:
MarkTarzan

Monster Guide updates
Using lots of data we've been collecting on monster weaknesses, I've taken out the somewhat useless "Element" column of the Monster Guide and replaced it with "Weakness", listing which element spell will harm a monster the most.

In addition, I've re-added the old %/level up data, where you specify your level and it tells you how many of that specific mop you need to kill to gain 1% or to level up.

Feedback, as usual, is appreciated. :)

NCsoft seals game publishing deal with NetDevil
NCsoft Corp. (www.ncsoft.net), a major online game provider in Korea, has finalized a game publishing deal with NetDevil (www.netdevil.com), marking the latest in a string of arrangements aimed at catapulting itself into the game publishing sector, the company said yesterday.

NCsoft said it will publish NetDevil's massively-multiplayer (MMP) game, temporarily titled "Wreckage," a move that it hopes will highlight a new game genre in the fast-growing online game market.

The company said Wreckage will unveil an entirely new style of play for the MMP genre, depicting post-apocalyptic car combat in a future-Earth setting. Players will have the ability to arm and upgrade their own vehicles, group with friends and take on other players in a full-fledged vehicle war.

Wreckage, which is in the development stage, is scheduled to debut in 2004 or 2005.

The publishing deal emphasizes NCsoft's focus to set up a lineup that goes beyond a major online game provider to embrace the worldwide publishing business for online-only computer games.

Previously announced deals include "City of Heroes" from Cryptic Studios and "Trade Wars" from Realm Interactive. Last month NCsoft launched service in Korea for Sony Online Entertainment's highly successful EverQuest.

"Our company's goal is not only to launch quality products worldwide but to leverage our position to bridge cultural barriers and bring gamers together in a global community," said Kim Taek-jin, president and CEO of NCsoft. "NetDevil's new game will bring a new level of excitement, action and community that we've not seen before in this space."

Scott Brown, president of NetDevil, said: "We're extremely pleased to be partnering with NCsoft to publish our next online game, and there were several companies for us to choose from, but NCsoft clearly offered the best combination of experience and publishing to a worldwide market."

Robert Garriott, CEO of NCsoft's North American subsidiary located in Austin, Texas, said that the NetDevil team is developing a unique concept for MMP games. "An auto combat-styled game opens up an entirely new setting and style of play for online gamers. We're pleased to add it to our growing MMP game lineup," Garriott said.

NCsoft, established in 1997, is leading the network-based game market in Korea with its flagship title "Lineage" carving out a 42 percent share.

NetDevil, which was also founded in 1997, is an independent game development company dedicated to the construction of massive multiplayer universes.

Dep: Chrystopher hits 50

When I met him in Giran I was quite skeptical as to whether this was real or not. But as Chrystopher, the newest level 50 dexterity Elf morphed into a baphomet and storm-shot (level 50 wind spell) me all my suspicion was replaced with awe.

Chrystopher hunts Fire Valley and around Oren when not lagging, Desert when he is. His +9 Yumi that he made himself keeps the monsters falling though he had eight lag deaths at level 49.

He is a wind elf, obviously to augment his bow skills. He has 19 dexterity when wearing his Bless of Elm and will have twenty if dexterity is the stat he chooses. He likes the Elven rotc but complains that it is “close but never on target” to where he wishes to be.

He plans to keep going with his level ups and claims that a couple of his Elfish pledge members are close to fifty as well. He thanks his pledge, TUS, for their undying support and says it was a long hard road he walked. Though no matter how hard that road was Chrystopher kept at it and scores another point for the elves!

What I'm working on...
Well, two Lineage-related things have been occupying my time. Levelling up on test and this thing:

Real-Life Picture Browser

Due to the popularity of the R/L Pic thread on our brother site, Templar Gaming, we've decided to help them out and set up a database where people can quickly browse pictures of each other on the web.

We had this system going a few months ago, but it was a well-kept secret. So, we've cleared the database and made it voluntary. Just upload your picture and you will have access to everyone elses.

This is supposed to be for fun. I had to really think long and hard about this idea, because I know some people are going to try to upload nasty pictures, or fake ones etc. So, here's the deal: We'll do it as a trial. If most people upload pictures of themselves, then yay. I'm proud of us. But if people start uploading crap, I'm going to start banning accounts from the site and potentially just take down the whole system.

So just to be clear: mess with the picture section and you will not be able to visit Lineage Compendium. I will ban your IP, plain and simple. If you have nothing positive to add to the pic section, then just leave it alone. k? :)

I just don't want it to be abused. :(

Captions, comments section and support for multiple pictures coming soon. Your suggestions (as usual for everything on the whole site) are appreciated, just shoot me an email: web@lineagecompendium.com.

Korean Test server observations
Lineage Playforum reported (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=2592) more unannounced changes to the Korean Test server:
  1. Summoned Bugbears (not King Bugbears) now have the bugbear ranged fire attack. This causes area damage to everything near the bugbears. However, they're having some problems with it right now since the fire attack hits the other summoned bugbears and then they start fighting with each other until there is only one left. lol
  2. Weapon Break spell now does up to enchantment+5 damage on your weapon. For example, if you have a +7 Katana, you can do 7+5=12 damage on it using Weapon Break. Playforum did not say (and I do not know) how it currently works. I will test this tonight and update the post. ^_~
  3. Ramia have a new attack animation. Now, they coil around you and squeeze. Players that remember the Elindare event back in Winter 2001 (when Lord British made his introduction and disappearance) will remember that the Serpents of Elindare always used the coil attack.
  4. And finally: +8 Ancient Crossbow. 1-handed, +1 damage, +5 to hit.

Unpublished Korean Test server updates
Lineage Playforum reports (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=2588) some news from the Korean test server:

  • The first is that Scorpions now poison. From the monster guide, they used to poison but haven't been, so this is more of a bug fix. But it's an important bug fix! Bring cyans!
  • The second is that the Ancient Robe has been unsealed. AC -12, weight *30*, Mage only. You can pretty much guess what I'll be doing (dragging my pledge along, of course) when Forgotten Island comes out ;)

Q&A with the US Live Team Support Manager, Rock
The next Q & A has started! This is your chance to ask questions of a specific NCsoft-Austin Lineage team member.

The guidelines to remember before starting:

  1. Post only two questions. There are bound to be repeats, and we are only taking about a dozen or so.
  2. The questions need to be directed toward the subject person and their duties. This isn't the same as the Veteran Questions, since it is not to answer specific gameplay questions. It is a chance for you to interact with this particular person and ask them something about their duties / position / department.

The question thread will be closed on 10/15/02.

This session's subject is the US Live Team Support Manager, Rock (a.k.a. John Erskine). John Erskine is the Manager of Customer Relations for NCInteractive, and his team is in charge of all aspects of Lineage Customer Support. The Lineage Support department provides in-game support, out-of-game support, account support, tech support, and account administration.

The Q & A thread where you should post your questions can be found at http://boards.lineage-us.com/cgi-bin/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=Discussions&Number=241225

Test Server Wipe fun
Well, test server is getting wiped again. This iteration, I had the best items I've ever had thanks to the Heine event, but when I blew them, the best thing I got was a -6 Death Knight Armor. AC 7-6. :)

Here are some other great items people have been emailing me. Got a better one, send me a screenshot and you might see it in this news post!

Oh and I totally forgot two other things that really made my day:

  1. I was wandering around the Orc Fort siege and StrKnight asked me if I wanted a spare COI. I said no initially and then reconsidered. He gave it to me and I had lots of fun. Later, I mapled him in Giran square. It was out of love though!
  2. I globalled "GM, I know you want to let me play with Sayha's Bow" and I looked in the corner of my screen and a Sayha's Bow was just laying there on the ground. I don't know if it was GM or not, but thanks anyway! ;)

update: I really didn't do much with the Sayha's Bow. I happened to be in the level 52 Dark Elf morph from the event, so I was causing some serious damage firing that thing with no arrows. It's pretty much exactly as Briel had told us back in July. About 30 HP per hit with full enchants. The magic arrows aren't magic, they are arrows, so they don't depend on MR. The magic animation looked alot like e-bolt, it was just a thinner, sharper version.

Forgotten Island NPC
JuDe1004.com reports (http://www.jude1004.com/news/index.asp?pg=/news/view.asp&cts_id=2541) that the NPC which takes an unseal scroll and a sealed armor and unseals it for you has appeared on the Korean Live servers. Marak2001 hits level 52!
Marak has finally done what noone has done on ken, hit lv 52. It's been roughly 10 weeks since we heard from Marak and last time when we saw him, he was in a Demon morph. I've been interviewing Marak since level 50 and in the past months many things had happened. I won't go into detail, but i'll remind you of things such as: the experience loss change/removal of the change, dex/ac, soft ac, improved stats per level by class type, mop level increase, etc. Despite all those nerfs and improvements, I can surely say it was a rough time for Marak. From level 51 onward, he spent 6-7 hours a day leveling up and gaining roughly 2 % a day. 2% seems a little, but it costs time and 200-250k. For the past two weeks, Marak spent most of his time in FV and unfortunately got a non-lag related death there. Marak's death count right now is 7; 6 of them are lag related. Marak's base hp/mp is 404/125 and has the goal of levelling some more. His dream is to own the Palace of Aden when Episode 12 is published. Marak's tips for leveling up a prince or any character to 52 are don't take unessasary risks and be patient.

A huge thank you goes to everyone on Ken. He also wants to thank (here comes the list) Mysticrain, Btsurugi, Davalore, Mrpancakes, scae, Lawbringer, Wodka, LadyAlek, Firewave, Drakenmoor, Tonk, Hoodini, SILENT, xlegendmagex, Raistalin, Greven and you~!

"NC Please change the exp lost at lv 50+" - Marak2001

Marak picked +1 STR making his base stats: STR 17, DEX 12, CON 11, INT 10, WIS 11, CHA 16. He uses Amulet of Strength and +5 Power Gloves, bringing his fighting strength to 20.

Level 45+, US servers
Leilo over at NC pulled the numbers for us. ^^

Her disclaimer: "There is one thing to keep in mind with the following numbers. The numbers below do not necessarily represent *active* players and in some cases extend back to the beta period, so don't look at this as being absolutely exact - 'cause it isn't. :)"

It seems appropriate to mention to anyone wondering why they are not in the Hall of Fame - I'm not psychic. I depend on you/your friends to tell me when you reach level 50+. So please, help me out, and actually email me instead of waiting for me to hunt you down. I have no way of finding out what level you are. So, please please email me when you pass 50 (and want to be on the Hall of Fame). It would make your loyal LC webmaster very happy. ^^

NCsoft's EverQuest Coming to Taiwan
Gamania signs publishing contract to NCsoft’s EverQuest

[October 3, 2002] NCsoft announced today its decision to publish online game ‘EverQuest’ in Taiwan following its launch in Korea. NCsoft, after signing a publishing contract with Gamania Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd., will release EverQuest in Taiwan via Gamania.

NCsoft remarked that the decision was based on the success of two-year service period of Lineage in Taiwan by Gamania, an indication that Gamania is capable of drawing another similar success with EverQuest. Lineage has garnered incredible success in Taiwan, presently taking 60% of the online game market with record levels of concurrent players of over 160,000.

NCsoft President, Tack Jin Kim, commented, “We have to come up with diverse genres and styles of online games, to keep pace with and make continuous development in the ever-growing online game industry that changes by leaps and bounds everyday. I have no doubt that EverQuest will be a totally new experience for Taiwanese gamers in a different way Lineage has been.”

President Albert Liu of Gamania said, “Lineage was a legendary success not only in Korea but also in Taiwan, helping change the landscape of the online game market in Taiwan. Along with the expansion of Taiwan’s online game market, I will exert my best effort to market and promote EverQuest so that it contributes to further market expansion and development.”

NCsoft has made a strategic alliance with Sony Online Entertainment Inc. last January, agreed to launch EverQuest in Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and is currently providing public beta services of EverQuest in Korea. Public beta services in Taiwan will begin from the first half next year.

EverQuest is a leading worldwide online game, most favored by U.S. and European players, featuring fantastic 3D graphic-based first person view.

LiTo info
Jude1004.com did an interview (http://www.jude1004.com/news/index.asp?pg=/news/view.asp&cts_id=2459) with one of the developers of Lineage Tournament (which they call LiTo). An interesting thing we read was that the purpose of NC was to provide some interaction between servers. There are almost 40 "parallel worlds" in Lineage in Korea and sometimes players that try to prove their strength to players from different servers take out their frustrations in the real world. So, they created this system as a place to interact, Lineage-style, when not on the same servers.

More on Forgotten Island
Lineage Playforum gave a small update (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=2524) on some interesting things about Forgotten Island on the Korean Test server.

They say that despite the recent update, they haven't noticed a change in the strength of the monsters. Also, Dark Elf has been on FI for some time now, and it is a big nuisance. Level 47 knight, -62 AC can receive about 50-100 HP damage per arrow from one of them.

The most popular hunting party in Forgotten Island is one knight and two elves. The elves sit on a cliff and the knight brings the group a single monster, which they kill together.

Underwater Boots and two rings we have never heard of (and don't understand the names of) are not a rare drop from the island. Also, if you bring enough braves and greens with you, it is possible to hunt the Forgotten Island with the potion drops you receive. The monsters of Forgotten Island seem to give about triple the experience of the regular monsters. (That would mean that the Forgotten Island monsters are about 1.7 times the level of normal monsters)

A knight with a +9 Tsurugi and -70 AC requires about 50 clears to 1:1 the Forgotten Island Drake.

should be
Ancient Sword damage has been changed from 30/20 to 35/20. The Ancient Great Sword stats have not been changed.

"Ancient Crossbow bonus has been changed from +5 to hit to +1 damage and +5 to hit."
should be

Autumn Treasure Event

It’s treasure time!

Autumn has fallen upon us! To mark the end of summer and the beginning of fall, we now have more incentive to rid Aden of its evil creatures.

Starting Thursday, October 3rd, and during certain times throughout the weekend, the creatures of Aden will venture forth into the world, their pockets slightly heavier than average. We invite you to hunt and join the fun as we cleanse the world of evil creatures, gather even more treasure than usual, and celebrate autumn in the world of Lineage!

Increased drop schedule (times listed are Central US time): *

Thursday 6 – 8 PM
Friday 8 – 10 PM
Saturday 10 AM – 12 noon
Sunday 2 PM – 4 PM
Monday 12 noon – 2 PM

Don’t tarry!

Commit this schedule to memory, put it in your PDA, set your alarm clocks and get in the game during these special times!

* Please note: The listed times are approximate and may be adjusted to avoid conflicting with any castle sieges in progress. There will be a brief NPC server reset before and after each increased drop period. These resets will be announced in-game.

Lineage Tournament
Jude1004.com (http://www.jude1004.com/news/index.asp?pg=/news/view.asp&cts_id=2425) reports that NC has announced a new service coming to Lineage in Korea in mid-November. This service will be called Lineage Tournament and will allow users to use their characters on the existing Korean servers to play in a tournament in a Death Match, a Honor Match or a Quest Battle - just like in the Lineage World Championship, except more like a pick-up game between friends (teams are up to 8 players).

Unfortunately nothing was mentioned on when or even IF it's coming to the US servers, so don't get your hopes up just yet.

Korean Test server observations
Lineage Playforum (http://community.playforum.net:8080/bbs/prog/column?action=read&iid=10051004&kid=2501) recently reported a few observations about the Korean Test Server:
  • When using the Wand of Summon Monster (Pine Wand) on Talking Island, there is a high probability of the wand failing to summon any monster at all. This is believed to exist to protect lower level players. Taking the wand to another location had drastically different effects.
  • There are still some issues with the True Target spell - a recent issue involved all players teleporting away when using the True Target spell.
